ChatGPT just got a $100 plan, and it’s not for everyone

OpenAI has introduced a new pricing tier for ChatGPT, adding a $100/month Pro plan that caters specifically to heavy users. This new plan sits between the existing $20 Plus plan and the $200 Pro plan, aiming to support users who need more capabilities without jumping to the highest price tier.

Targeted at Heavy Users

The $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier is designed for coders and power users who often push the limits of the Plus plan. This new subscription offers significantly increased usage limits, providing approximately five times the Codex usage available in the Plus plan, with the potential for even ten times more usage during peak times. The focus of this tier is on supporting longer, high-effort Codex sessions that demand more from the AI.

OpenAI has acknowledged the growing demand for Codex, which now boasts over three million weekly users and has seen a five-fold increase in usage within just three months. With around 70% month-on-month growth, the company recognizes the necessity of a dedicated pricing structure for these high-demand workflows.

Features and Benefits of the New Plan

In addition to the increased usage limits, the $100/month plan provides access to more advanced models, enhanced research tools, and expanded capabilities for agent-style tasks. This plan is not intended for casual users; rather, it is aimed at professionals who utilize ChatGPT as a serious work tool.

A Shift in Pricing Strategy

The introduction of this new pricing tier signals a significant shift towards usage-based pricing within OpenAI’s offerings. As advanced AI workloads become increasingly costly, a one-size-fits-all pricing model is becoming less viable. The addition of a $100 tier illustrates this transition, indicating that heavier usage will incur higher costs.

This change also alters the perception of ChatGPT from a universally accessible tool to one that is segmented by affordability. With the $100 plan now standing as the middle ground, the AI service is beginning to resemble a premium subscription model, where users must evaluate their needs against a tiered pricing structure.

As OpenAI continues to innovate and expand its offerings, users are encouraged to assess which subscription tier best aligns with their usage patterns and professional needs. The introduction of the $100/month plan is a clear indication of the company’s commitment to supporting a diverse range of users while accommodating the growing demands of heavy Codex workloads.
